Manchester Paralympic World Cup

The 2009 Paralympic World Cup has just ended. Hosted in Manchester, England and sponsored by Telecoms company BT, it was an extremely successful Disability Sport event.

Over 400 elite athletes from all over the world took part in a wide range of sports events including cycling, swimming and basketball.
Records were broken, including the 100m swimming freestyle by Eleanor Simmonds of the UK. Eleanor is the teenager who also had tremendous success in the Beijing Paralympics in 2008.

The wheelchair basketball was particularly exciting and the men's Gold medal winners were the USA after a terrific scrap with 69-48 win over Australia. The ladies Gold was won by the Netherlands with a 66-42 win over Mexico.

Wheelchair Basketball is only open to wheelchair athletes. Athletes are classified according to their physical ability and are given a points rating between 1 and 4.5. Each team fields five players, plus substitutes, and the team 'balance' cannot exceed a points rating of 14.5.
As in able-bodied Basketball, players must dribble the ball and it is a violation to take more then two pushes on the wheels without dribbling the ball. The whole event can get pretty frenetic and some of the scoring shots were extremely skilful.
Competitors are now looking forward to 2012 and the the young British athletes will be looking forward to making this a very special home event!

Wheels on Rails

At a recent sitting in Parliament (April 2009), MP James Grey asked how many trains or what proportion of trains were accessible to wheelchair users.
The Secretary of State for Transport provided details suggesting a large number of trains are now usable by wheelchair users. The written answer includes a spreadsheet with some detailed information.

Wheelchair Amnesty

It is reported in the Northumberland Gazette newspaper that Tyneside health authorities have declared an 'amnesty' for the return of NHS Wheelchairs.
The PCT wheelchair services believe there are a large number of unused wheelchairs, belonging to the NHS, being stored in the wider community.
In these financially strained times, measures such as this amnesty, may well help towards keeping overall NHS costs down.

Exhibitions for Wheelchair Users

April 2009 is an interesting time for those in the UK interested in Wheelchairs. There are two exhibtions held in the Midlands that draw visitors from all over the Country.

The first is the PMG National Training Event held at Warwick University. The exhibition is promoted as 'the meeting point for suppliers and healthcare professionals working within the rehabilitation environment of posture and mobility'. It attracts a wide range of Health care professionals and those with an interest in all aspects of posture and mobility care.

The second, and much larger exhibition is held at the NEC at the end of April. 'Naidex' is billed "as the UK’s largest event for homecare, disability and rehabilitation. Naidex is your best opportunity to touch, test and compare all the latest new products and services available."The event is aimed at healthcare professionals, dealers and the public.

Even though the current economic climate is very difficult, these exhibtions provide a good opportunity to see the progress and development aimed towards meeting the needs of wheelchair users.
